That’s a wrap

So it’s all over, I can’t believe it. What am I going to do without Jim? Well we might not be making any more videos together but I am certainly going to remember all the things I’ve learned over the last few months and will make sure I keep putting them into practice as time goes on. Remember you can check back in here at any time to watch the videos we made and refresh the memory, just in case things start getting a bit hazy in a few months time.
There’s a lot to remember so to make it easy for you here are my top 5 “getting started” tips:
1) The immersion. More feared in Ireland than a dose of swine flu, Jedward and economic meltdown put together! No need to be afraid anymore everyone, with the advances in modern technology you can now get yourself a timer switch and enjoy stress -free hot water for ever more.
2) Keep and eye on your energy usage. Now I don’t mean you have to be a fanatic about it, no need to park yourself in front of the electricity meter for hours on end watching the numbers roll by. An easy way to do it is to sign up for online billing which lets you track your electricity usage over time (and also means less paper; another thing that’s good for the environment and good for clutter-control at home too).
3) The best things in life are free. Never a truer word said. Love, laughter, fun, friends, family, facebook chat, and now you can add the HALO home energy audit to that list. There’s plenty of good reasons to get this done like.. making your home more energy efficient will increase it’s value, save you money on your bills, reduce your carbon foot print..oh and did I mention it’s free?
4) Lightbulbs – might not be the most interesting of topics to be going on about but by making a simple switch to energy saving lightbulbs you will be doing your bit for the environment and saving money at the same time. Click here to see just what you can save.
5) For the full picture, take the tour of ESB Customer Supply’s virtual energy efficient house to find out exactly how you can save energy in every room. It’s full of loads of hints and tips including the 30 minute rule (not to be confused with the 30 second rule)!
Happy energy saving,

Smart Meters and our last BIG ticket giveaway!
Posted by Des on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
We have smart phones, we have smart cars, and now we have smart electricity meters…almost. All the time technology is getting better to make it easier for people to be more efficient.
A long long time ago Jim Curran had a dream. A dream that one day there would be meters that were smart. Smart enough to read your electricity usage accurately every half hour, smart enough to read it remotely and give you the data every half hour too, so his children, and his children’s children would never have to deal with an estimated bill ever again!
Here he is showing me how his dream could be coming to life in the not to distant future. Have a watch, there’s some very ‘smart’ appliances making their debut near the end too. Tell me what your appliances would say to you if they could talk, and you could win a pair of tickets to my gig in the Button Factory next Wednesday. Post it to comments at the end of this.
As it’s the last giveaway I’m feeling generous so this week I have 10 pairs of free tickets to dish out.
Good luck everyone! Winners will be announced right here on Monday morning so make sure you check back in, cause you never know it could be your lucky day.

Hi All,
I hope those that have won tickets are looking forward to the gig. I hope there are not too many people that are upset that they did not win yet. I am delighted with the way people have engaged with the site to try to win tickets. The economists would say that the response to the incentive to win something has been huge.
I hope you have been winning with savings on your bill as well. I guess you could say I cheated a bit this last while as I have had to spend more time than originally planned in NY to be with the folks so I can’t really boast about how much my bill will be down. Although it was a good exercise in making sure that everything was turned off. That would have been some bill if I had left the immersion on for the whole of Christmas. Would have been some bath when I got back though.
I am assuming this video clip is as old as it looks and that we are not the first generation to look at our energy usage. If it is not as old as it looks than I am still happy to share it will you.
See you next Wednesday. Glad the gig is not on Tuesday.
